Statement

The relationship between our cityscapes and the battle for nature’s survival is fascinating. I’m intrigued by the overlooked public spaces; innocuous areas not easily recognized by location. Alleys, parking lots and intersections are spaces that could originate from any city. There’s little to distinguish them. These images share “something”: perspective, scale, shadows, etc. I either digitally or manually collage them into a street scene or interior. Although the buildings, curbs, streets and other landmarks are what we associate with normal life, they’re slightly off. Buildings and roads don’t meet or they end abruptly. There’s an off-kilter feeling to these environments. I work thick, dimensional embroidery in bright colors to create plants, rocks, sky and water to the scene. I add people from old photos. These people are ignoring the chaotic scene, much like we humans ignore our changing climate. Eventually, nature will win this battle, but we may not be here to enjoy it.
